Anne-François de Serilly - Artist
Born in 1966, Anne-François de Serilly was only 25 when he chose to abandon the path that had been laid out for him, and embraced life as an artist.
During his first years of apprenticeship, he studied the art of reproduction of the XVIIth and WVIIth centuries great Masters at the Marino Barbero’s studio. He patiently imitated their every brushstroke, anxious to soak up their techniques and perfect his drawing skills. de Sérilly also took anatomy classes at the Beaux-Arts de Paris with the great Professor Jean-François Debord several years in a row. In 2008, he graduated from the Van Der Kelen school of decorative painting in Brussels (Belgium).
Inspired by the classics, he leaves nothing to chance when he paints, rather, he plans each composition meticulously. Thanks to his many years of experience, he is capable of capturing moments and making them into heirlooms. His other favorite themes include card games, dance, circus acrobatics, high fashion and everything maritime.
In the nineties, AF de Sérilly had been living in Brazil where he took a liking to painting tropical nature. His years in this exotic country influenced the variety of his palette as well as the choice of the subjects, celebrating exuberance and joy of life.
His work also belies a certain kinship with Art Deco. AF de Sérilly is always in search of geometric simplifications and daring perspectives. In the middle of geometric patterns that echo each other, between two parallels or in the squares of a chessboard, emerge a curve of a hip or the roundness of a chest, a whole universe where curves are mixed with frames. A parade of bodies marches amidst a frivolous and light existence; as light as the sheer fabric of the dresses draped over enchanting creatures. High-slit, leather skirts, bare backs and high heels figure in his work time and time again, offering lipstick-smeared mirrors on an eternal feminine revisited.
Since 2022, de Sérilly has been painting in Maine (USA), in the seaside village of Biddeford Pool, where his wife's family has lived for several generations. Captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, he spends his days painting the sea stirred by the evening breeze, or the sound of silence in the heart of a snowy forest.
The work of Anne-François de Sérilly has been presented in exhibitions around the world.
